Description

Folios 245-246: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Response to a request to state the case of three men who were impressed. John Gregory, aged 19, was imprest as no indenture was produced and the case was put before the Admiralty with a Protection Certificate dated 28 May 1807 that stated he was then 20 years of age. Philip Clarke, aged 35, was imprest by Lieutenant Clarke on 28 November 1809. He said he belonged to the Isle of Man Tender, but he was discharged when the Tender was dismissed from service. George Winstanly, aged 19, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on 11 January 1810 from a noted crimp house.

Folios 247-248: enclosure with folios 245-246: Petition by Christian Clarke, Douglas in the Isle of Man for the release of her husband Phillip Clarke, who served in the Impress Service under Lieutenant Joseph Clarke for three years and received his discharge but the warrant was withdrawn. She has five children and will be in a dire situation unless he is discharged.

Folio 249: enclosure with folios 245-246 and attached to folios 247-248. Thomas Howard, Minister of St George's, Douglas, Isle of Man, 10 January 1810. Certifies that Christian Clarke, wife of Philip Clarke, has five children, the eldest no older than thirteen and is in a most distressed situation.

Folios 250-251: enclosure with folios 245-246. Thomas Harrocks. Liverpool to the Admiralty, 18 January 1810. Encloses an affidavit taken before the Mayor of Liverpool [see folios 252-253] in respect of his brother-in-law, George Winstanley, who was imprest and is now on board HMS Princess lying in the River Mersey. Confirms he served an apprenticeship to a bricklayer named Daniel Trueman and has worked at this trade ever since. When he was imprest he served under the Earl of Sefton as a bricklayer. Requests his discharge.

Folios 252-253: enclosure with folios 245-246. John Clarke, Mayor, Town Hall, to the Admiralty, 16 January 1810. Affidavit by Thomas Harrocks stating that George Winstanley has never served at sea.

Folios 254-255: enclosure with folios 245-246. George and James Kemp, Poole to the Admiralty, 19 January 1810. Request for the discharge of John Gregory, their Apprentice, who was imprest at Liverpool despite having a three year Protection granted in May 1807, which he had in his possession when he was detained.

Folios 256-257: enclosure with folios 245-246. Affidavit by Thomas Matthews, Master of a vessel called the Vistal of Poole sworn before Thomas Earle, Justice of the Peace, Lancaster 16 January 1810. States that John Gregory, Chief Mate on board this vessel is an Apprentice to Messrs George and James Kemp, Merchants of Poole. His Indenture lead to the Admiralty granting him a Protection dated May 1807 for three years. He was imprest but despite producing this certificate Captain Carter, Regulating Officer, refused to discharge him as he said were not the same person.
