Description

Folios 187-188: William Charleton, Regulaing Officer, North Shields. Reports on the case of John Yorray who was impressed from the Fame of Arbroath. He says much is made of the fact he was Mate of the Fame but he had no appointment as such. He also questions the statement that he served no apprenticeship as he considers the agreement entered into between the parties as an Indenture. He thinks the reason why Mr. Duncan does not want to claim it was an apprenticeship is that the terms of his conditions were too much in favour of the Master.

Folios 189-190: enclosure with folios 187-188. Covering letter dated 22 September 1809 enclosing application of Mr. Duncan of Arbroath.

Folios 191-192: enclosures with folios 187-188. Letter dated 20 September 1809 by Andrew Duncan, Arbroath. States that Yorray/Yorie is a foreigner who entered his service when he and another man were rescued by one of his ships in the Baltic in 1801 and chose not to return home. He is now the Mate of the Fame. Either of these should exempt him from the Impress. Despite his 8 years living in this country he has not established ties like a British subject. He states that Captain Charleton is mistaken in thinking Yorie served as an apprentice and that he refused to accept that Yorie was Mate of the Fame as he had no affidavit stating that. Is one necessary? Anyway he encloses an affidavit from Peteer Steven which should cover that.

Folio 193: enclosure with folios 187-188. Affidavit dated 10 December 1804 of Peter Steven, Master of the brig Hunter, sworn before David Balfour JP at Arbroath. Gives an account of the rescue of two foreigners in the Baltic and their subsequent employment in the Hunter.
