Description

Folios 306-307: Commander Benjamin Crispin, HMS Leveret, Harwich. In response to the letters from Vice Admiral Billy Douglas and from the vicar and magistrates of Lowesfoft concerning William Saunders, Saunders was impressed by Lieutenant John Duval on 9 February from the Britannia of Shields while she was safely anchored in this port. At the time he was impressed, Saunders said he was a Sea Fencible, but has since acknowledged that he was discharged some time ago.

Folios 308-309: enclosed with folios 306-307. Letter from Vice Admiral Billy Douglas, Yarmouth, to the Admiralty dated 15 February 1809. Encloses a letter received from the vicar and magistrates of Lowestoft concerning William Saunders, now on board HMS Leveret.

Folios 310-311: enclosed with folios 306-307. Letter from Richard Lockwood, Vicar, Bartholomew Ritson, Curate, and J G Spurgeon, James Everard, A C [Amold ?] and John Elplh, Lowestoft, to Vice Admiral Billy Douglas, Yarmouth dated 14 February. Report that on 7 February the collier Britannia of South Shields, Samuel Dixon, Master, was seen off Lowestoft flying a distress signal. A yawl from the town went out to her aid and managed to get her into the port, but while they were making her safe they were board by a boat from HMS Leveret whose crew impressed William Saunders, one of the yawl's crew. As he is a local man with a wife and five children to support, ask for his discharge.
