Description

Folios 271-272: Commander Benjamin Crispin, HMS Leveret, Harwich. Encloses a protection produced by John Langley, who was impressed from the Adventure of Aberdeen. The description given in the protection does not match Langley except for the colour of his hair, and Commander Crispin is certain he is not the same man. He is being detained to await further instructions.

Folios 273-274: enclosed with folios 271-272. Affidavit sworn by Robert Crass, Master of the Good Intent of Blyth, at Harwich on 3 February 1809 before Justice of the Peace John Hull. The vessel was on a voyage from Hartley to London carrying coal. Swears that John Langley of Warkworth, Northumberland, had apprenticed himself to ship owner William Patterson of Blyth and that a protection was issued to him by the Admiralty in October 1807. While he was serving aboard the Good Intent he was impressed by an officer from HMS Leveret, Benjamin Crispin, Commander. Commander Crispin has seized the protection saying it does not describe John Langley accurately. Swears that Langley is the man described in the protection.

Folios 275-276: enclosed with folios 271-272. A certificate of protection issued by the Admiralty to John Langley, apprentice to William Patterson of Blyth, dated 22 October 1807.
