Description

Folios 233-234: James Coutts Crawford, HMS Venus, the Vigo River. Encloses a letter from the Governor of Bayonna asking for arms and ammunition. Reports that all of the province of Galicia is in revolt against the French and the Spanish are constantly asking for arms. He will give them whatever he can spare from his ship. The French still hold the city of Vigo with about 500 men, and have 2,000 at Tuy, but are punished every time they come out looking for provisions, and have been heavily attacked by the peasantry in the last 24 hours. The whole population seems determined to resist the French.

Folio 235: enclosed with folios 233-234. Translation of a letter from [Domingo de Soyando ?], Bayonna, to"The Captain of the British Frigate Venus" dated 17 March 1809. The Spanish army attacking Vigo and Tuy in concert with the Portuguese desperately needs the arms and ammunition in the enclosed list, and his own resources are now exhausted. Asks that his application be forwarded to the British ministry. PS The bearer of this letter has the power to receive his reply.

Folio 236: enclosed with folio 235. [Domingo de Soyando ?], Bayonna. Translation of a request for 8,000 muskets, a similar number of swords, cartridges, flints and gunpowder.

Folio 236A-236B: enclosed with folios 233-234. The original letter in Spanish of which Folio 235 is apparently an English translation.

Folio 236C: enclosed with folios 233-234. The list in Spanish of arms requested from Captain Crawford, of which Folio 236 is apparently an English translation.
