Description

Folios 173-176: Commander Samuel Colquitt, HMS Persian, Spithead. Acknowleges the letter enclosing one from the Navy Board concerning the purchase of a lighter by Mr Lang which was used to lift and then re-lay the moorings of HMS Princess while he commanded her. He was directed to Mr Lang by the Board, but found he did not know the rates for hiring such a craft, and so suggested one be purchased for the task and then sold on. The Board authorised the purchase of a vessel of about 50 tons which Mr Lang recommended as suitable, and this was then turned over to him. He found it unsuitable for the job. Does not think the vessel is worth what was paid for it was an old French sloop in very poor condition. Reminds the Admiralty that he had leave for several weeks while this was happening, and on his return to HMS Princess found that the officer commanding her in his absence had been obliged to shift her mooring to keep her safe in bad weather.

Folio 177: Admiralty note, not dated, stating that the letter received from the Navy Board should be sent to Commander Samuel Colquitt for his comments.

Folio 178: [Blank].
