Description

Folios 461-462: George Cockburn, HMS Belleisle, at sea. 47.80N 7.00W. Having met HMS Encounter on her way to Plymouth he is taking the opportunity to report that he is safe on his way to Quiberon Bay as ordered.

Folios 463-464: enclosure with folios 461-462. Copy order dated 1 March 1809 from Honourable Sir Alexander Cochrane, Commander in Chief, Barbados and the Leeward Islands, on board HMS Neptune, Fort Royal Bay, Martinique, to George Cockburn, Acting Commodore. He is to take under his command Captain the Honourable Warwich Luke, HMS Ulysses and Acting Captain Brenton, HMS Belleisle, and 7 transports named below which have on board the French Garrison of Martinique who are prisoners of war. The transports should hoist French flags. Captain General Villaret-Joyeuse and his suite are to be received onboard HMS Belleisle. He should head for Quiberon Bay and land the Captain General under a flag of truce as agreed in the terms of the capitulation of the island. He is to wait in the bay out of reach of the French batteries and await an answer regarding an exchange of prisoners. When a reply is received either exchange the prisoners and head for Spithhead, or head for Spithead with the French prisoners. Transports HMS Sampson, HMS Harwich, HMS Mariner, HMS Bellona, HMS Betsy, HMS Idas, HMS Mercury.
