Description

Folios 270-271: William Charleton, Regulating Officer, North Shields. John Gilbert, described, was impressed out of the Sparkler of Dundee and sent on the Lyra as Midshipman Stephenson of Newcastle said he had regularly seen him before the date of the indenture, at sea in herring fishing. He has written to Captain Watson of Dundee to enquire about the characters of the swearers of the enclosed affadavit. They are all journeymen sailmakers and shopkeepers. He asks if it is the custom in Dundee, for everyone who can go to sea when the herring appear which is what Gilbert says happened.

Folios 272-273: enclosure with folios 270-271. Letter dated 5 March 1808 by Robinson Ramshaw. Is sending affidavits about John Gilbert for his discharge. Michael Maxwell, Carpenter, impressed at Liverpool, sends his thanks for his release.

Folios 274-276: enclosure with folios 270-271. John Potter, David Gilbert, Andrew Durrie, David Blair, John Andersmark. They know John Gilbert and he is apprenticed to James Cabot, Shipowner of Sparkler, Master Andrew Durrie, and has never been at sea in a carrying boat.
