Folios 596-597: Nathaniel Day Cochrane, HMS Orontes, the South Downs. Acknowledges the letter concerning John Smith, lately a Midshipman under his command. Included him in the confidential report on the Mates and Midshipmen because his improper conduct meant he was not worthy of a recommendation. Felt he had been deceived about the man's character, and while at Barbados Mr Smith wrote a letter asking the leave the service, which Capt Cochrane passed on to Rear Admiral Sir Philip Charles Durham. The Admiral would not accept it and told him that Mr Smith should write directly to the Admiralty. Does not feels he can recommend Mr Smith as he has set a bad example for other young officers, particularly by leaving in the ship two bills which he drew in the West Indies and which have not been paid.
