Description

Folios 566-567: Commander James Clepham, HMS Charybdis, Halifax. Acknowledges the letter of 14 June 1814 which has just reached him, asking for his account of the convoy which sailed from St Thomas for Halifax on 14 February 1814. Reports that the Masters of the merchant ships were told before they left St Thomas how far they would be accompanied, and when the convoy reached the Latitude of 24º North, there were no strange sail in sight. He gave each of the Masters a certificate that they had been under convoy to that latitude. Encloses a copy of his orders from Rear Admiral Sir Fancis Laforey and a copy of his log for the voyage. Folios 568-569: enclosed with folios 566-567. Copy of orders from Rear Admiral Sir Francis Laforey, HMS Dromedary, [Carlish ?] Bay, Barbados to Commander James Clepham, HMS Charybdis, dated 6 February 1814. He is ordered to escort all vessels bound for Bermuda as far as 24º North Latitude and then to proceed to Prince Rupert's Bay, Dominique. He is to place himself under the orders of Commander Henry Lynne of HMS Eclipse and cruise to protect merchant vessels from Guadeloupe, Antigua, Montserrat, Nevis & St Kitts and to intercept any enemy vessels sailing to or from the island of St Bartholomew.

Folios 569-570: enclosed with folios 566-567: Commander James Clepham, HMS Charybdis. Copy of his log from 16 February to 20 February 1814 while escorting a convoy from St Thomas.
