Folios 251-252: Edmund Denman, HMS Redpole, Harwich. Reports his arrival at Harwich for the reception of the Princes of Brunswick as directed in orders received from Vice Admiral Foley. Advises that at 3pm on Wednesday 31 August 1814 he discovered a suspicious ship of war to which he gave chase and fired a shot at 4.30 pm, speaking with her without bringing the ship to. Advises that it was established that the ship was a United States frigate, the John Adams, sailing under a Flag of Truce, who had left the Texel on 30 August 1814, bound with despatches for the American Government. Considers, in the circumstances, that it was important that the ship was not detained or boarded.
