Explains that James Gillighan [Galligan] has approached him to have the 'R' placed against his name on 16 March 1813 removed from the books. Advises that Gillighan claims he was invalided from Harbour Duties on 3 December 1812 from HMS Venus and was granted leave of absence from HMS Raisonable on 13 December 1812 to 3 January 1813 and which was extended by Captain Donald MacLeod, Regulating Captain, at Liverpool due to sickness, and from where he was sent to an infirmary where he remained until 10 February 1813 when he was removed to HMS Bittern for a passage to Plymouth. On arrival Gillighan was discharged onto HMS Salvador del Monde on 13 March 1813 and then to HMS Barham, 23 March 1813 and then to HMS Monmouth, 4 April 1813 and then discharged into the cutter HMS Dwarf, 7 April 1813, for a passage to HMS Raisonable which he joined on 10 April 1814. States that he has investigated the Pay Book at the Pay Office and has no reason to doubt the claims and recollects seeing a certificate from the Surgeon of the Infirmary as well as a ticket from MacLeod, Regulating captain, Liverpool. Advises that Gillighan appears first on the pay books of 1812 for HMS Raisonable as No 846 and in 1813 as No 942 , bearing an entry for 4 January 1813, and explains the reasons as to why Gillighan could not have deserted.
