Description

Folios 195-196: James Caulfield, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports on the case of George Christy [Christie], impressed on shore at North Shields on 1 August 1814. Advises that is difficult to ascertain correctly whether Mates when on shore are on Ship's Duty or not, as they will invariably say they are on duty. States that George Christy was alone on the quay when taken and attempted to bribe the gang who impressed them. Christy sailed for the Nore on HMS Beaver on 5 August 1814.

Folio 197: enclosure with folios 195-196. Letter, 5 August 1814, from Alexander Lesslie, North Shields, to the Admiralty. Requests the discharge, with a stipulated sum, of his cousin George Christy, impressed n 1 August 1814 while on shore on ship's duty. Encloses an affidavit to this effect.

Folios 198-199: enclosure with folio 197. Affidavit, 5 August 1814, of Richard Walker, Master Mariner, South Shields, County Durham. States he is the Master of the Brig Speculation of South Shileds and thathe appointed George Chgristie as Cheif Mate of the brig. States that on 1 August while he was on shore preparing to journey to Newcastle, he called George Christie to come on shore to speak with him and that while he was instructing Christie about business matters, about 5 yards from the ship, an officer of the Impress Service impressed Christie.
