Folios 269-270: Colin Campbell, HMS Plover, Coast of Africa. Advising that after arriving at Goree on 24 September he had sailed for the Cape de Verd Islands in search of an American privateer said to be cruising there. Arriving at Bonavista on 1 October he found that the privateer had reached the island a fortnight earlier and had 'most shamefully' violated neutrality by going into Bonavista under English colours and robbing an English ship there at anchor of all her guns, fourteen 12-pounders, and all her stores, as well as taking the Master's clothes and all his mathematical instruments and pillaging the ship in a disgraceful manner. He went in search of her, but failed to find her. Says she is a brigantine, and notes that if she is taken by any British cruiser it will be easy to see the guns are not fitted to her.
