Description

Folios 263-264: James Caulfield, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Responding to Mr Barrow's request of 19 February, he encloses a report on the case of William Griffiths, now aboard the Namur or Quebec, and returns the enclosure and protection. Griffiths was impressed by Lieut. Fullton on 26 January and detained for the service as he was thought to have been at sea before. He 'gave a very contradictory account of himself' and could not say how he had been employed before the date of his indenture. He was therefore sent to the Nore. He is a stout, healthy young man of 19.

Folios 265-266: enclosure with folios 263-264. Letter dated 18 February 1814 by William Griffiths' brother describing their father as 'an aged father of eight sons' most of them now serving respectable professions. He says William's indentures are genuine and that he is not yet 19 years old.

Folio 267: enclosure with folios 265-266. Affidavit of John Griffiths, father of William, in Cardigan, South Wales, swearing that his son's indenture is dated 14 March 1811 to Robert Robinson, of Monkswearmouth in Durham, shipowner, for the term of 3 years, to learn the trade of mariner and he had never been to sea before that. His son was impressed on 26 January 1814 out of a ship called the Autumn.
