Folios 255-256: James Caulfield, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Advising that no man of the name of David Maughan has been apprehended at his station as a deserter and put on board a transit, as was stated in the enclosed letter from William Kirton, which he received from the Admiralty the day before and is now returning.
Folios 257-258: enclosure with folios 255-256. Letter dated 9 February 1814 by William Kirton, Sandgate New Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, regarding the letter he had earlier written to the Admiralty on 9 January about Maughan, saying he was a deserter from HMS Ocean. Kirton claims this information had resulted in the man being taken by Lieut. Francis at North Shields and put on board the receiving ship, and so he is now writing to ask about a possible reward.
