Folios 230-231: James Caulfield, Regulating Captain, North Shields. As requested by Mr Barrow, in his letter of 10 February, he is reporting on the case of Joshua Hearn, and returns the enclosure. Hearn was impressed by Lieut. Fullton on 7 February, on shore, and was detained for the service as it appeared his apprenticeship had expired. Hearn is 18, has been 3 years at sea and is an active young man.
Folios 232-233: enclosure with folios 230-231. Letter dated 7 February 1814 by Jonas Cockerill of North Shields, asking to pay for the release of Hearn, as he has only been bound to the sea for 3 years, one of which was spent on shore, partly due to ill health and partly to attend school. His apprenticeship has only just expired and his mother is a widow with two other children, with a concern in shipping which Hearn intended help her with.
