Description

Folios 209-210: James Creighton, HMS Aeolus, Quebec. Writes that he is sending a triplicate of his letter of 9 November, advising of the arrival of Aeolus and of his having superseded Captain Popham as her commander, also that she is 'laid on the ground at Diamond Harbour ... as much at her ease as if she was laying in a dry dock'. Also says he found it essential to put bilge blocks under the ship at both ends, to protect against ice, and to have the quarter deck housed over and the ports closed to keep out the weather, for which a party of carpenters has been employed. For the same reason he has purchased three stoves, and wood for fuel. He has taken on 20 men from the different naval transports stationed there for the winter, to get on with the refitting and repair of Aeolus' rigging, and in addition to their own provisions, again due to the severe weather, he has ordered an extra allowance of grog for them (they have no other recompense). Adds that as so many men are tempted by the high bounty offered, to go to the lakes in Canada, there is a shortage of good men and he hopes Admiralty can supply this deficit to enable him to return to England in the spring. In a PS he says if the men sent out in the spring are required to go to the lakes for the defence of the upper province, he would like to accompany them.

Folios 211-212: enclosure with folios 209-210. Triplicate of Creighton's 9 November letter, saying he has superseded Captain Popham, who has gone to join Sir James Lucas Yeo with the men under his orders, leaving only sick and unfit men. Gives details of the laying up, repair and refitting of Aeolus. Says the officer in command there is Major General Glasgow, with whom Captain Popham has corresponded and who offers all assistance.
