Folios 205-206: [Thomas?] Cochrane, 111 Park St, Grosvenor Square. Acknowledging receipt of letter informing him he has been appointed to the command of HMS Tonnant, but asks for dispensation not to join her for some 10 or 12 days, as he has urgent private business to conclude - though Sir Alexander Cochrane had expressed a wish that he should follow him to America and that he had addressed the Admiralty on the matter, he had not realised he would be asked to go. The business he must attend to is the urgent drawing up of a patent for an invention very important to commerce and to the Service, he says, which has occupied him for the past year. If a captain absolutely must be immediately present he suggests his former first lieutenant, now Captain Johnson, would perform this service for him willingly.
