Description

Folios 199-200: William Charleton, Newcastle upon Tyne. Acknowledging receipt of Admiralty letter of 26 January and its enclosures, herewith returned. From the Rendezvous books for 1809 he finds that a Cuthbert Davison was discharged on 8 May that year, from the tender Lyra, having provided one able seaman and two landsmen as substitutes. Says he was 21 and an active young man some six years at sea. Apologises for the slow response, which he attributes to his ill health.

Folios 201-202: enclosure with folios 199-200. Letter dated 14 January 1814 by G. L. Farmer, London, for Abraham Peell, saying that Cuthbert Davison provides substitutes, May 1809.

Folios 203-204: enclosure with folios 199-200. Letter dated 8 January 1814 by G. L. Farmer, London, for A. Peell, sending an affidavit from Davison stating the loss of a certificate of discharge dated circa 8 May 1809, and not 1810, as stated before. Asks for a fresh certificate. On folio 204 is the affidavit of Cuthbert Davison, given aboard the Margaret and Ann on 8 January 1814, that having provided substitutes for his impress he was granted a certificate by Captain Charleton but that he subsequently lost it from his pocket.
