Description

Folios 165-166: James Caulfield, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Replying to Mr Barrow's request for information on the case of William Clarke, now aboard the transit, and returning the enclosure and Clarke's protection. Says Clarke was impressed by Lieutenant Fullton on 27 December, and detained as Caulfeild believed him to be serving a second indenture - he asserted he was bound for 3 years, while the indenture produced was for 5 years and the Master who applied for him, and gave an affidavit, said he had never looked at the indenture but believed it was for 3 years only.

Folio 167: enclosure with folios 165-166. Statement of Thomas Brame, of King's Lynn, Norfolk, that William Clark of Gaywood, Norfolk, bound himself to Brame as apprentice for the period of 5 years, from 24 October 1811. This obtained him a protection from the Admiralty for 3 years, but he was impressed from Brame's ship, the Sally, on 27 December 1813. The boy's mother and his former employer, a farmer, also swear he has never used the sea or any navigable river before - all details attested by the local rector and churchwarden.

Folio 169: enclosure with folios 165-166. Affidavit of William Robertson, Master mariner, swearing to the same details.
