Description

Folios 482-483: Francis Holmes Coffin, HMS Arethusa. John Peacock late commander of the Apodaca did entice five Seamen from his ship on 24 July with the help of his brother Thomas Peacock and Thomas Kemp, Mate of the Apodoca, now sailing to London. He concealed them when HMS Variable arrived in Havanna. George Peacock and Perulo Extram from the Mary Ann are witnesses to the incident should they be prosecuted.

Folios 486-487: enclosure with folios 482-483. Robert Piper, Havanna. Captain Thomas Peacock, the Mary Ann, brought four Seamen to his house and requested they be hidden until HMS Variable left port. He refused but later agreed and Peacock said that provisions would be sent to feed them and he would be paid. They were collected by Mr Bennion, Mate of the Mary Ann and he was told to send his bill in and that they were deserters from HMS Arethusa. He did not know this previously.

Folios 486-487: enclosure with folios 482-483. Letter dated 16 April 1813 by Sam England, Master, HMS Variable, Havanna. In Havanna in Februaury, he received information from a Seaman that four deserters from HMS Arethusa had been taken by the Mary Ann. The Master of the Mary Ann said that he had four men and he had intended to put aboard the first Naval ship that came in but they had taken his boat and escaped.

Folios 487-488: enclosure with folios 482-483. Letter dated 16 April 1813 by Lieuteant R. Hales, HMS Variable, Havanna. He questioned Thomas Peacock about four deserters and he said he had had them aboard and was going to put them onto the first Naval ship that arrived. However they had taken his boat and gone to Regla. Hales had to leave without investigating but with these other statements, it is clear that Thomas Piper housed them and Captain Peacock sent for them as soon as HMS Variable sailed.
