Description

Folios 459-460: Francis Holmes Coffin, HMS Arethusa. Is sending the correspondence with Morales, chief of the insurgents in Vera Cruz area.

Folios 461-462: enclosure with folios 459-460. Head Quarters, Tehuacan, August 27 1812. Is sending the offiical papers to open commerce with the Ministers of Great Britain to buy arms in consequence of the communication with the coasters of Haliscoya as informed by Thomson, Glasgow which state that Great Britain is offering peace and commerce with New Spain. The answer can return on the Punta de Anton Lisardo.

Folios 463-464: enclosure with folios 459-460. Jose Ma Morales. In Spanish.

Folios 465-466: enclosure with folios 459-460. Translation of 463-464: Jose Ma Morales, member of Congress and Captain General. Following the sentiments of the Captain of the English frigate at Haliscoya and papers found with the inscription 'Thomson, Glasgow, Great Britain offering peace, liberty and commerce to New Spain'. He would like to order 8,000 muskets, 2,000 pistols and 6,000 swords, to be paid for once the weak Spanish and French forces have been defeated.

Folios 467-468: enclosure with folios 459-460. Letter dated 18 August 1812 by Francis Holmes Coffin, HMS Arethusa, to Don Chase Morellas. Don Augustine Nino is incorrect as he has had no communication with the coast of Haliscoya and he offers his services to prevent bloodshed. He will assist with a flag of truce to bring peace if ordered.

Folios 469-470: enclosure with folios 459-460. Letter dated 20 December 1812 by Francis Holmes Coffin, HMS Arethusa, Vera Cruz. Will send a copy of a letter from the insurgents without a signature but he thinks it is from Morellas.

Folios 471-472: enclosure with folios 459-460. Jose Guevero, Veracruz. In Spanish.

Folios 473-474: enclosure with folios 459-460. Jose de Guevero to HMS Arethusa. He notes that you informed him of communication with the enemies of the Spanish government. He will accept nothing from them except they avail themselves of the general pardon which the Cortes has granted.

Folios 475-476: enclosure with folios 459-460. Letter dated 27 December 1812 by Francis Coffin, HMS Arethusa, Vera Cruz, to Charles Stirling, Commander in Chief Jamaica. Is sending letters from Morales. He has had talks with Brigadier Bravo, nephew to Morales that if they could not ally with Great Britain, they would ally with America. He has not sent the originals as the Spanish government here would open them.

Folios 477-478: enclosure with folios 459-460. Letter dated 13 April 1813 by Francis Holmes Coffin, HMS Arethusa, Havanna. Is sending the original letters between himself and Morales now as the Spanish Government in that area opens letters and he did not want them falling into the wrong hands. He hopes they received the copies sent long since in the charge of Lieutenant Cochrane.
