Description

Folios 193-194: Archibald Cochrane, 60 Conduit Street. Is sending a lawyers letter threatening him for impressing a second Mate on an East India vessel. It is all unfounded and he asks for help from the Solicitor as he worked for Admiral Trowbridge on the incident. Mr Cousins deserted from HMS Fox on 23rd December 1806 as entered on the ship's books.

Folios 195-196: enclosure with folios 193-194: Letter dated 6 March 1813 by Thomas Davies, London. William Cousins was impressed from the Betsy in 1806 to his distress and loss of property and degradation as he was put to serve before the mast and his friends will help him recover the 2120 rupees he has lost.

Folios 197-198: Enclosure with folios 195-196: William Cousins statement. The Betsy sailed from Calcutta and was fired upon so Captain Dundas on the Betsy sent Cousins to assist Mr Wilson, Chief Mate, as the ship was escaping from what he felt was a French privateer. When HMS Fox came alongside, they realised their mistake but Captain Cockrane insisted on taking the Officer in charge who had made the Betsy run away from the Fox. When they got to Penang and later Calcutta, Captain Cochrane told Mr Cousins he could find a substitute but he could not. Captain Cochrane then said Cousins could leave anyway but refused to give him a written discharge. When William Cousins lately arrived in England, he found that HMS Fox had declared he had drowned on 23 December 1806. He claims 2120 rupees for lost trade, wages, sextant and books that he had to leave on the Betsy.
