Description

Folios 538-539: William Cumberland, Regulating Officer, Cowes. Reply to letter dated 4 May 1812 respecting the impressment of Thomas Trowbridge aged 30 and Thomas Filmar [Filmore] aged 32. I have to state that these men were impressed By Lieutenant [John] Francis on 24 April 1812 out of a coasting vessel called the Rose in June as they were employed in Navigating the same from Yarmouth to Cowes.

Folios 540-541: enclosure with folios 538-539. Letter dated 1 May 1812 by B P Blackfind[?], John Street, Berkeley Square, to the Admiralty. Two men belonging to the South West Battalion of Isle of Wight Volunteers under my Command having been impressed at Cowes on 24 April 1812 and conveyed on HMS Royal William at Spithead an application having been made to the Port Admiral at Portsmouth for their discharge, without effect. I request their discharge and enclose a certificate from the Captain Commanding the Company they belonged too.

Folio 542: enclosure with folios 538-539. Letter dated 28 April 1812 by Robert Hicks Captain, Freshwater, to the Admiralty. This is to certify that Thomas Trowbridge and Thomas Filmore [Filmar], (Impressed at Cowes on Friday last) are members of the South West Battalion of Isle of Wight infantry Volunteers and are not liable to Impress. Verified on Oath at Yarmouth 28 April 1812 E Rushworth a Magistrate for Hampshire
