Description

Folios 598-599: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Acknowledging letter of 22 October enclosing Mr William’s application for his son James Williams, late Midshipman on HMS Princess’s pardon and to supply a substitute, saying he was ‘run’ from the ship due to his being affected by a malady in his brain. Replies James Williams did the duty of a Midshipman on HMS Princess and run 3 November 1806. Says a short time previous to which he appeared much deranged and said he’d been wounded in action while on HMS Swift, cutter in the North Seas. He’s of the opinion his father didn’t know what had happened to him until he heard from him last week.

Folios 600-601: enclosed in folios 598-599. Letter dated 24 October 1807 by Captain Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Returns letter about James Williams enclosed in theirs of 22 October which he omitted to send with his 24 October letter as he didn’t find out until after it was sent to the Post Office. Begs the omission is excused.

Folios 602-603: enclosed in folios 598-599. Letter dated 19 October 1807 by Robert Williams, 12 Clare Street near St Anns, Liverpool. Petitions for his son James Williams, age twenty two who’d one sea voyage under Captain Clark in 1802, was impressed 1806, requests his discharge on account of his fractured brain and the violent fits he has suffered from since childhood which make him unserviceable for employment. After giving him up for dead he received a few lines from him in London 14 October informing him of “his great distress”.
