Description

Folios 574-575: Captain Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Acknowledges letter of 9 September requesting he report on William Shimmin’s case, ordered in letter of 3 September. Says their former letter was sent to Captain Robert Mends who only sent him the enclosure, saying he noted it was answered and returned it only he finds their letter was about John Kermode’s discharge. He made a mistake as both men appearing on the books from the Isle of Man and their cases being similar. Apologizing reports William Shimmon, impressed at the Isle of Man, rated Ordinary, is a farmer who occasionally employs himself buying herrings during the Fishery season. He’s never been to sea and put onto HMS Muros 1 September for Plymouth. Sends copy of his 7 September letter.

Folios 575A-575B: enclosed in folios 574-575. Letter dated 7 September 1807 by Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Replies to letter 3 September enclosing application for the discharge of William Shimmon and James Pudden. Says the case of the former was stated in a letter 1 September and he has no one of the latter on his books or who answers to the name on his ship.

Folios 575C-575D: enclosed in folios 574-575. Jane Shimmin, Liverpool, 31 August 1807. Seeks relief from sorrow and grief, requesting the discharge of her son William, impressed at the Isle of Man. Says her husband who suffered from asthma died on hearing he was taken. Says she is able to collect a sufficiency from her friends to procure a substitute. He is twenty years old and has a blind grown up sister. Asks they write to her at John Tysons, Georges Dock, Liverpool.

Folios 575E-575F: enclosed in folios 574-575. Sarah Pudden, Liverpool, 3 September. Writes for James Pudden, her son onboard HMS Princess. His distresses father and mother being dependent on him ask to request a substitute Landsman for him to be discharged. Ask for a reply to be sent to John Dutton, Publican, Wapping near Dukes Dock.
