Description

Folios 545-546: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Received two contadictory letters, copies of which he sends having been ordered to convert the Gun room into a Hospital ward. He induced Mr Green, a young gentleman volunteer with surgical and medical training to go to London as a candidate for the post of Assistant Surgeon if he was able to pass his exams. Says difficult operations can require surgical assistance and that he can find an Assistant Surgeon elsewhere if the Transport Board needs Mr Green elsewhere. Feels he’s not well used by those gentlemen.

Folios 547-548: enclosed with folios 545-546. Letter dated 24 August 1807 by R. George, Transport Office, to Captain Colquitt. Acknowledge letter of 17 August asking that Mr Green, the bearer, is appointed Assistant Surgeon to HMS Princess. Say they do not intend to appoint an Assistant Surgeon to HMS Princess.

Folios 548-548A: enclosed with folios 545-546. Letter dated 6 July 1807 by R. Barlow, Navy Board, copy. Were directed 2 July following Dr Baird’s visit to HMS Princess to convert the Gun Room into a hospital ward and have an Assistant Surgeon borne on the Books additional to her present complement. Send an extract of Dr Baird’s report asking the works will be performed in the best and cheapest manner. [Extract not present].
