Folios 532-533: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Acknowledges 20 August letter inclosing application from Joseph Gunnery for John Riston’s discharge saying he doesn’t know who Joseph Gunnery is and that Riston did receive the usual bounty or impress money of one shilling when he entered at the rendezvous. States he’s 53 years old, not 42 and appearing very infirm agrees to him providing a substitute. Returning enclosure.
Folios 534-535: enclosed in folios 532-533. Letter dated 18 August 1807 by Joseph Gunnery, Liverpool c/o George Orred Esq, Liverpool. Says Captain Colquitt asked he writes on behalf John Riston, Cabinet Maker who a month ago driven to acts of desperation after the death of his wife whilst intoxicated entered the Service and has been since on the Tender or Guard ship. He entered age 42 though is 55 or 56 and has children aged towards thirty. His family’s very concerned about him, petition can he buy his discharge by procuring one able bodied landsman. Riston was never at sea before or received any bounty.
