Description

Folios 497-498: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Reply to letter of 6th following Dr A. Baird?s representation to the Admiralty to have the Gunroom converted into a hospital ward. Feels he must say he did not argue with Dr Baird but does not draw the same conclusion as he does. It deprives the Warrant Officers and Midshipmen of their cabins and store rooms and because of the expense of taking them down and building them up again on the Main deck. There would not be enough room on deck to work up the ropes or space for the mess. The hatch way is the thoroughfare to the coal pits, spirit room, Servants and Captains rooms and the magazine. The Press room could easily be converted as it was done during the last war. Says he never gave judgment as a Naval Officer to Dr Baird?s expensive proposal when another better and more economical presented itself.

Folio 499A-499B: enclosed in folios 497-498. Scale drawing of ships deck showing layout of proposed alterations.

Folios 500-501: enclosed in folios 497-498. Letter dated 12 July 1807 by George Brown, Carpenter, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Estimate for making a hospital ward on board HMS Princess. Asked by Captain Colquitt to convert the after part of the press room into a sick ward and removing the warrant officers cabins on the main deck and store rooms below. Costing two hundred pounds as requires a bulkhead however would save the Government money and can be done by the Carpenters on board.
