Folios 153-154: Benjamin Clement, HMS Goelan, Lat. 26, 41N. Long 70, 3 West. Recommends John Beardsley Smith, acting Lieutenant for this past six months. Enclosing Mr Smith’s memorial, trusts he wi’ll be rewarded.
Folios 155-156: enclosed in folios 153-154. Memorial of John Beardesly Smith. Was actively employed on HMS Isis, HMS Ganges, HMS Hydra and HMS Powerful from 16 April 1795 to 5 July 1802 when he was paid off at Chatham. Employed as Midshipman on HMS Hydra where he received severe wounds at the taking of St Lucia, shot in the leg. HMS Cracker brig, a musket ball shattered his hand and he lost a thumb. Was a in charge of a watch under Sir Francis Laforey and did the 2nd Lieutenants duty on HMS Bittern sloop, Captain Kittoe for six months. Took Lieutenants exams, 4 August 1802; passed Sir Andrew Snape Hammond. While HMS Blanche was blockading off Cape Francis she captured a National schooner then went to HMS Pickle and on HMS Gracieuse schooner, 10 April 1805 sank the National schooner La Parthen Monde. On HMS Gracieuse 24 September 1806 on the Spanish main he destroyed the Spanish Fellucca under the battery of Savanilla off Rio De La Hache [Venezuela] and on the 24 September with boats from HMS Alexandria destroyed an eight gun brig. Encloses his certificates, [no longer present]. Recommendations from Admirals Duckworth and Dacres. Requests a Commission.
