Description

Folios 136-137: Edward Sneyd Clay, Regulating Officer, Belfast. Acknowledges letter 27th October. Says the 20 years old man calling himself Martin Hunter a Saddler by trade is he believes Matthew Cunningham, volunteered at the Hollywood Rendezvous entering the Navy denied being an apprentice. That’s why he forwarded him to the fleet onboard HMS Pelter gun-brig.

Folios 138-139: enclosed in folios 136-137. Affidavit, Robert Alexander, Saddler, Belfast, 20 October 1807. Affidavit before William Auchinlech, Public Notary, Tuesday 15 October 1807. Robert Alexander, Saddler has sworn before William Clarke saying Matthew Cunningham his apprentice was from Lisburn. Sends indenture [no longer present]. Affidavit sworn before William Clarke, Magistrate, Belfast. Says Matthew Cunningham his indentured apprentice was taken on board the tender at Belfast and put on HMS Pelter about October 4th which has since sailed to London convoying ships from Belfast.

Folios 140-141: enclosed in folios 136-137. Letter dated 21 October 1807 by Campbell Sweeny, Belfast. Writes on behalf of Mathew Cunningham who was impressed and is aboard HMS Pelter, Captain Evelyn which has sailed for the Downs with seven ships form the port to London. Says his documents and indenture as an apprentice saddler show he was never at sea. Requests he is discharged. Says the Regulating Captain said he's’ using the name Matthew Hunter.
