Folios 283-284: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. James Matthewwas impressed by Lieutenant Mitchell as there was good information that he was not the real Mate of the Melanthe. It is believed that the enclosed affidavit was given him as a fraudulent means of protection from the press.
Folios 285-286: enclosed with folios 283-284. Letter dated 9 March 1807 by John Bowman, Shipowner, 3 George Yard, Lombard Street. He asks for the release of James Matthews from HMS Zealand as he is the Mate of the Melanthe.
Folio 287: enclosed with folios 283-284. John Bowman, Shipowner. A sworn affidavit that James Matthews was the Mate of the Melanthe.
