Description

Folio 408: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Receipt of a letter enclosing an application from William Rigg for the discharge a Black man, William Scott, on production of a substitute. States that he is a West Indian about 25 years of age, sickly in appearance, who has generally been with Mr Rigg as a servant, and has been about 12 months in that capacity at sea.

Folios 409-410: enclosure with folio 409. Undated letter from William Rigg, London, to William Marsden. A person of colour is now on board HMS Princess at Liverpool under Captain Colquitt. He was impressed there. Asks for him to be released as he is not a seaman. He is willing to provide a substitute. He asks for a reply to be sent to him at Mascoll's Hotel, Adelphi.
