Description

Folios 384-385: Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, Liverpool. Receipt of letter stating the displeasure of the Admiralty at his conduct as communicated in his letter of 9 [April 1806]. He is extremely sorry to have caused such disapproval, as he was entirely motivated by a desire for the good of the service. He was aware that an official communication had been made to the Collector of Customs at Liverpool to detain all Prussian vessels and knew that many had been sent into port by HM ships and privateers. Some of the principal merchants of Liverpool had papers belonging to 17 Prussian vessels which were expected daily. This lead him to believe that the steps he had taken would be approved to thwart their escape. He also directed Lieutenant Elkington to take every opportunity of impressing men thus continuing the service on which the tender is usually employed. He hopes his reasons will act as a palliative to the severity of his sentence. He has already sent a vessel to bring the Lieutenant and men back , leaving the tender at the Isle of Man.
