Folio 350: Samuel Colquitt. HMS Princess, Liverpool. Receipt of letter stating that Mary Courtney had petitioned for the discharge of her husband James Courtney having found 2 able bodied landsmen and one Seaman as substitutes and directing his discharge if they had been received. It seems that 2 landsmen have been accepted but Captain Cumberland refused to accept Seaman William Rowley as a substitute and sent him on board the friendship tender as a newly raised man. As he was not sent on board HMS Princess, which is usually the case for newly raised men, he cannot speak of his qualifications, but it appears that Captain Cumberland considers him a Seaman. Asks for directions.
Folio 351: enclosure with folio 350. Copy of letter dated 24 February 1806 from Samuel Colquitt, HMS Princess, to Captain Cumberland concerning William Rowley. He is sending a letter from Mr Tucker asking whether William Rowley, who was sent on board the friendship is the same person who was misnamed by himself in his last letter as William Hamilton. Rowley was brought from Manchester at the expense of James Courtney's wife, but when he was brought to the Bird Street Rendezvous he was not allowed to be presented as a substitute but was impressed. Asks him to be allowed as a substitute for James Courtney.
Folio 352: enclosure with folio 350. Copy of a letter dated 24 February 1806 from W Cumberland, Liverpool, to Captain Colquitt, HMS Princess. William Rowley appeared before him as a Landsman Volunteer substitute for James Courtney on 11 [February 1806]. He is 43 years old and a Seaman so he did not accept him as a substitute but offered to receive him as a volunteer.
