Description

Folios 226-227: Valentine Collard, HMS Railleur, Bremerlek Creek, River Weser. Replies to letter of 14 December 1805 concerning the conduct of John Hall, Boatswain's Mate. He has at all times conducted himself in a way deserving of promotion.

Folios 228-229: enclosure with folios 226-227. Undated petition from John Hall, late Boatswain of HMS Explosion, now Boatswain's Mate of HMS Railleur. He has served nearly 20 years, mostly in the capacities of Boatswain, Boatswain's Mate and Quartermaster. During the last year he was for 3 years on board HMS Irresistible under Captain Sir Andrew Snap Hammond and in HMS Royal Sovereign on the ever memorable 1st of June. At the beginning of this war he entered HMS Ville de Paris at Plymouth under Captain Ricketts from which ship he was appointed Boatswain of HMS Explosion under Captain Paul whose certificate is enclosed. On 24 September 1804 he went on shore to the dock yard at Spithead to get his bill, vouchers and receipts for stores and had to stay on shore until the next day by which time the ship had sailed. He immediately reported to the Admiral's Office and got a passage to the ship on 9th October [1804] soon after which he was tried by Court Martial. He then went on board the Admiral's ship HMS Monarch lying in the Downs and on 30 April 1805 was drafted to HMS Thrasher under Lieutenant Knight and served until 26 July [1805] as Quartermaster. He was then drafted to HMS Railleur under Captain Collard as Boatswain's Mate. When he stayed on shore to await his bills and vouchers he had no intention to desert. He asks to be reinstated as Boatswain.

Folio 230: enclosure with folios 228-229. Certificate dated 9 August 1804 from Captain Paul, HMS Explosion. John Hall served as Boatswain of HMS Explosion from 15 October 1803 until 9 August 1804 and was a worthy Officer.

Folio 230A: Enclosure with folios 228-229. Certificate dated July 1805 from Lieutenant and Commander James Knight, HMS Thrasher. John Hall served as Able Seaman from 30 April 1805 until 26 July 1805 and was a trustworthy and good seaman.
