Folios 265-266: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reply to letter dated 31 January 1806., enclosing a letter from Mr Smith with other papers in the cases of Thomas Hood and George Horsley. He cannot add anything to his original letter of the 12 September 1805. Does not know who Mr Powel is, who writes the enclosed letter. He appreciates the facts as stated by Captain Edward Row of the Sea Fencibles on the early part of the war that two thirds of Corps are liable to Impress. Encloses a copy of his letter of 12 September 1805.
Folio 267: enclosure with folios 265-266. Copy note from William Charleton, Regulating Captain, to William Marsden, dated 12 September 1805. George Horsley and Thomas Hood were impressed at South Shields on 2 September 1805 with no protections. As to their being volunteers, has never considered that is any point of view an exemption.
