Description

Folios 329-330: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports on the case of Jonathan Harwood, impressed at South Shields on12 September 1805 whose discharge has been applied for by Captain D'Arcy Preston. States that Harwood is bound as an Apprentice for 5 or 7 years and that Harwood was given the enclosed Affidavit as Mate from his Master as protection. Notes that, according to the Chief Justice of the King's Bench, Mates cannot be Apprentices and thus Harwood is legally impressed, neither did Harwood have permission to be out of his district nor could he produce any certificate of being enrolled as a Sea Fencible. States Harwood was sent to the Nore on 16 September 1805.

Folio 331: enclosure with folios 329-330. Affidavit dated 19 February 1805, of Edward Smith, Master, and Jonathan Harwood, Mate, of the brig Ebenezer at Scarborough and sworn before John Woodall, Bailiff State that they are the Master and Mate of the brig Ebenezer an employed in the Coal and Coasting trade. Contains a physical description of Jonathan Harwood.

Folios 332-333: enclosure with folios 329-330. Letter dated 19 Sentencer 1805, from Captain D'Arcy Preston, Sea Fencibles, Whitby to the Admiralty. Encloses a letter from Captain Crawford stating that a Mate, a Sea Fencible, has been impressed out of his vessel. Requests the man is discharged.

Folios 34-335: enclosure with folios 332-333. Letter dated 17 September 1805, from Captain James Coutts Crawford, Scarborough to D'Arcy Preston, Captain, Sea Fencibles, Whitby. Confirms that Jonathan Harwood, Mate of the Brig Ebenezer of Scarborough, employed in the coasting trade, is a Sea Fencible under his orders. Advises that Harwood was impressed on 13 September 1805 at Shields from onboard the Ebenezer and in now on board the tender to be sent to the Nore. Confirms Jonathan Harwood is a 7 years apprentice to the sea which he understands to be the reason why Harwood has been impressed.
