Description

Folios 304-305: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports on the case of John King, impressed on 27 August 1805 at Newcastle, and George Horsley and Thomas Hood, who were impressed at South Shields on 2 September 1805. States that while John King had a ticket it had not been renewed since 20 June 1805 and Horsley and Wood have no protection either from Parliament or the Admiralty, nor does them being volunteers afford them any exemption.

Folios 306-307: enclosure with folios 305-305. Letter dated 6 September 1805, from Carr Ibbetson, Major, Royal Hartlepool Volunteer Artillery. Hartlepool. Writes in the absence of Lieutenant Colonel Spearman, Commander of the Royal Hartlepool Volunteer Artillery, outlining the circumstances of the impressment of George Pounder, George Horsley and Thomas Hood, Fisherman and Privates of the Volunteer Corps. Explains, as Volunteers, the men should be protected from the impressment even though Captain William Charleton has informed they are not, and asks for the men to be released so they can rejoin the Corps. Adds a note that George Pounder has now been discharged as a result of being reported by the Surgeon of the Corps, and that George Horsley is now lying dangerously ill on board the tender.

Folios 308-309: enclosure with folios 306-307. Letter dated 8 September 1805, from William Edge, Captain Sea Fencibles, Aldborough, Suffolk to the Admiralty. Advises that John King, impressed on 27 August at South Shields, has a ticket given to him to signify that he was enrolled as a Sea Fencible at Woodbridge and is Mate of the Illustrious and has a wife and 4 children.

Folio 310: enclosure with folios 308-309. Ticket dated 26 January 1805, and renewed on 19 April 1805 and 20 June 1805, for John King, Sea Fencible at Woodbridge, Suffolk, signed by Commander James McFarland or in his absence by Lieutenant B Beaufoy. Confirms his status as a Sea Fencible and gives leave to follow his occupation outside of the district for a specific voyage. Contains physical description of John King on reverse. Eward Mann, Master, also mentioned.
