Folios 239-240: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports on the cases of James Dean, John Reddy and Joseph Harris whose discharge have been sought by Mary Carr and James Robinson in the enclosed documents. Advises that James Dean's case was already reported to the Admiralty on 14 June 1805 and nothing in the enclosed petition contradicts anything contained in that earlier report. Reports that John Reddy and Joshua Harris were sent to North Shields from Whitby and both state they have protections from the Admiralty as American citizens but which have been detained by Captain Richard Poulden, [Regulating Officer] as having been improperly obtained. Both men appear to have been invalided at Hull on 24 March 1805 from HMS Gelikheid to which they belonged for nearly 2 years and both admit to not having American certificates when impressed in the early part of the War. States that the present certificates were obtained by an oath of John Hudson, Master of an American vessel in Liverpool, whom they met in London by chance and that they were natives of America. Says Joseph Reddy speaks with a strong Irish accent and although he claims to be a native of Boston does not have the appearance of an American, while Joseph Harris says he is a native of Baltimore but might be a native of one of the Southern states.
Folios 241-242: enclosure with folios 239-240. Petition dated 19 June 1805, of Mary Carr, 41 Old Gravel Lane, Saint George, Middlesex, to the Admiralty. Petitions for the return of the American Protection certificates, which were obtained from the Admiralty in April 1805, to John Reddy and Joseph Harris, and are now being withheld by the Regulating Captain at Whitby as forgeries. States that she has known both men for more than 10 years and during that time they have made voyages to and from America and whilst in England have lodged with her. Says she has been privy to many conversations between them and their American acquaintances some of which related to their birth and upbringing and from which she firmly believes that they are natives of America. Requests that the men are therefore discharged. Encloses letters from the two men.
Folios 243-244: enclosure with folios 241-242. Letter dated 9 June 1805, from John Reddy and Joseph Harris, HMS Lyra, North Shields to Mary Carr, 41 Old Gravel Lane, Ratcliff Highway, London. Ask Mary Carr to waste no time in applying to the Admiralty for their release. Explains that they are expecting to be sent to the Nore at any time and that their American Protection Certificates have been held by the Regulating Captain on the suspicion of being forgeries.
Folios 245-246: enclosure with folios 241-242. Letter, dated 13 June 1805, from John Reddy and Joseph Harris, HMS Lyra, North Shields to Mary Carr, 41 Old Gravel Lane, Ratcliff Highway, London. Thank Mary Carr for her great interest in their welfare and present crisis and believe that she and Mrs Liviston [Livingston], through their exertions, will be able to clear then as they know the circumstances under which the American Protection certificates were issued. Requests that she writes to the Admiralty immediately as they are expecting to be sent to the Nore in 4 or 5 days. Sends their best respects to Mrs Livingstone and his love to Ann.
Folios 247-248: enclosure with folio 239-240. Letter, dated 20 June 1805, from James Robinson, Southwold to the Admiralty. Encloses a certificate of Captain James Storry, Master of the Brig Sole bay from which James Dean a Southwold Mariner and Sea Fencible was pressed on 30 May 1805 at Sunderland, despite having a Protection Certificate from Captain Charles Tinling, Commanding Officer at Southwold. Hopes that the Admiralty will be able to order the release of James Dean. [Item not enclosed].
Folios 249-250: enclosure with folios 239-240. Petition dated 21 June 1805, Philis Dean, wife of James Dean, Mariner, and William Aldrich, Robert Folkard, Thomas Allen and Payne Coleman, Owners of the Pilot boat, the Busy of Southwold and James Storry, Master of the Sole Bay of Southwold, witnessed in the presence of Robert Carr and Francis Wayth, Bailiffs and Justice of the Peace for Burgh of Southwold State that James Dean has a wife and 2 children and is the Master of the said Pilot Boat and a Sea Fencible. Explain that James Dean was given leave by Captain Charles, whilst the Busy was undergoing repairs, to join a voyage of the Sole Bay under the command of Captain Storry but was impressed while the vessel was lying in harbour on 30 May 1805 in Sunderland. Requests that the Admiralty order his discharge so that he may rejoin his family and resume his station. Robert Carr and Francis Wayth add that James Dean is also a Constable and was sworn into office on the Friday of Easter week 1805 and engaged in the voyage with their permission but omitted to take their certificate of protection for being a Constable.
