Description

Folios 233-234: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports the case of Hugh McCormack whose discharge has been applied for by Rowland Burdon in the enclosed letter. States that Hugh McCormack was impressed at North Shields on 14 June 1805 being employed as a Waterman conveying a raft of timber from Shields to Sunderland and detained as not having subscribed his proportion towards raising the quota of men for the Keelmen and Watermen on the River Wear, where he has been employed for 4 or 5 years.

Folios 235-236: enclosure with folios 233-234. Letter dated 20 June 1805, from Rowland Burdon, Castle Eden, Stockton on Tees to the Admiralty. Covering letter enclosing a letter from the Commissioners of the River Wear.

Folios 237-238: enclosure with folios 235-236. Letter dated 17 June 1805, from Acting Commissioners of the River Wear to Rowland Burdon. States the case for the release of Hugh McCormack who was recently impressed while transporting timber on a raft to Sunderland where there is extensive work being undertaken. State that Hugh McCormack has never been to sea and has a wife and 5 small children and has been employed by the Commissioners of River Wear for 6 years as a labourer. Explains that the navigation of the Wear frequently requires boats to be sent off to sea to lay anchors, buoys and beacons and if they are liable to be impressed, there will be great difficulty persuading men to work as labourers on the River Wear as well as injury to the service. Letter signed by Robert Allan, Chairman, and John Davison, Edward Aiskell, S Robson, Charles Simpson, J E Mordey, Christopher John Cay.
