Description

Folios 219-220: William Charleton, Regulating captain, North Shields. Reports on the case of Thomas Taylor whose discharge has been applied for by Joseph Bulmer in enclosed letter. States that Thomas Taylor was impressed on shore in South Shields on 4 June 1805. Explains that Taylor is the same man whose Affidavit as Master of the Royal Charlotte he enclosed in his letter to the Admiralty of 7 June 1805 with a request that Richard Lee might be prosecuted as an example. Believes that the enclosed letter sufficiently proves in what light these people consider a positive Affidavit in that they obtained an Affidavit saying Taylor was the Master of the Royal Charlotte while, at the same, acknowledging he was not. Trusts the enclosed letter will put an end to their defence.

Folios 221-222: enclosure with folios 219-220. Letter dated 5 June 1805, from Joseph Bulmer, South Shields to the Admiralty. Requests the immediate discharge of Thomas Taylor, Master of the Royal Charlotte, Richard Bulmer & Co, Owners. Explains that Richard Bulmer & Co are ship builders who employed Richard Lee, a Master on another of their vessels, to refit the Royal Charlotte for sea. States that Richard Lee employed Thomas Taylor as Mate of the Royal Charlotte in May 1805 as the ship was ready to take in a cargo of coal for London and that Lee also obtained an Affidavit for Thomas Taylor. Explains how and why Taylor was impressed and his astonishment at the reason William Charleton has given for his refusal to discharge Thomas Taylor.
