Description

Folios 215A - 216: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Requests that the Admiralty considers making an example of apparent cases of conspiracy by prosecuting the parties involved. Outlines the case involving Thomas Taylor, impressed in South Shields on 4 June 1805 in South Shields and said to be the Mate of the Royal Charlotte in an Affidavit produced on 5 June 1805, sworn by Richard Lee, Master. He believes however, that on information from Lieutenant Dathan, that Richard Lee in not the Master as the ship is not yet registered, as confirmed on 5 June 1805 Mr Butmer, the owner, but is actually the Master of another ship now in dock on the Thames. States that while ships have been under repair he has authorised the Mates to sleep on shore and encloses a certificate given by Lieutenant Dathan to Richard Lee while the ship was in dock as he did not suspect that the ship was not regularly registered, and as no application was made for its renewal, Thomas Taylor being on shore was legally impressed. [Item not enclosed].

Folio 217: enclosure with folios 215A-216. Affidavit dated 15 May 1805, of Richard Lee, Master of the Royal Charlotte of South Shields, sworn before Richard Wallis, Justice of the Peace at the Parsonage, Market Place, South Shields. States that Thomas Taylor, aged 42, is employed as the Chief Mate of the Royal Charlotte. Contains a physical description of Thomas Taylor.
