Description

Folios 158-159: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Advises on the outcome of his enquiries regarding the circumstances of Matthew Brown as stated in an extract of a letter from George W Erving, American Consul to the Admiralty on 23 March 1805. Advises that Brown was on board a tender at Bristol in 1782 and not invalided as stated on impressment. States Matthew Brown claimed to be a native of Amboy and has a certificate from the Custom House at New York but believes him to be an Irishman, though Brown may have lived in that neighbourhood as had some knowledge of those places and much more than many he has examined who have Custom House Protections, which he believes Mr Erving, American Consul, supplies at a very easy rate.

Folios 160-161: enclosure with folios 158-159. Extract of a letter, dated 23 March 1805, from George W Erving, American Consul, to the Admiralty. Restates that Matthew Brown was in the United States for the period mentioned in the Admiralty letter, that he has a Customs House Protection and there is no doubt that Matthew Brown is a citizen of the United States.
