Description

Folios 126-127: William Charleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. Reports on the circumstances surrounding the impress of James Robinson and the conduct of James Durham, Lieutenant. Encloses a letter from Lieutenant Durham with a statement of the motives under which he acted. Corroborates Lieutenant Durham's report that James Robinson never alluded to being Master of a Ship but was considered unfit for service due to lameness, received as a Gunners Mate during the last war. Advises that an application was received from the Custom House for James Robinson to appear before a Magistrate and he still had no idea that the Robinson was Master of a Ship.

Folios 128-129: enclosure with folios 126-127. Letter dated 11 March 1805, from James Durham, Lieutenant, South Shields to William Charleton, Regulating Captain. States the circumstances surrounding his impressment of James Robinson. States that he was asked by Mr Flinn, owner of the Apollo, on 1 November 1804 to impress James Robinson who he had engaged as Master of the Apollo but who never found the ship due to being drunk and rambling in the street. Advises that James Robinson never mentioned nor produced any documents to say he was the Master of the Ship or he would not have detained him.
