Description

Folios 118-119: William Carleton, Regulating Captain, North Shields. States the case of Robert Fairclough whose discharge has been applied for in the enclosed letter from P Taylor, Agents. Reports that Robert Fairclough was impressed on 28 February 1805 on the street at South Shields and claims to be Mate of the ship and whose Master appears to have the power of sending the Mate onshore when and where he pleases.

Folios 120-121: enclosure with folios 118-119. Letter, dated 4 March 1805, from P Taylor, Agent, Custom House Sunderland, on behalf of William Storey and owners of the ship Liberty, to the Admiralty. States that Robert Fairclough is Chief Mate of the ship Liberty, William Storey, Master, and was impressed on shore on 28 February while procuring provisions and other articles for the ship. Encloses the Affidavit made at the time by William Storey at the time to procure Fairclough's release but which was rejected by the Regulating Captain. Explains that the Chief Mate has signed articles to proceed with the ship to Dantzick to which destination she is chartered with a cargo of merchandise already loaded which will suffer considerable damage if the ship is not put to sea before 13 March. Requests the release of Fairclough.

Folio 122: enclosure with folios 120-121. Affidavit sworn on 8 February 1805 at before Richard Wallis, Clerk and Justice of Peace, South Shields by William Storey, Master Mariner of the Liberty brig of Sunderland. States that he hired Robert Fairclough as a be and go Mate and that Fairclough was impressed into Service while procuring provisions for the ship in his Master's absence, and is now on board the Attender in the River Tyne.

Folio 123: enclosure with folios 120-121. Protection Certificate, dated 31 December 1804, sworn by William Storey at the Parsonage, South Shields before Richard Wallis, Justice of the Peace for the County of Durham. Swears that Robert Fairlcough has been hired as the Chief Mate of the Liberty of Sunderland. Contains a physical description of Robert Fairclough.
