Description

Folio 62: Charles Cobb. Note stating he heard, from Captain Smith [John Smith] that his ship has been on the Aldborough Napps but is now safe. One of the prizes has lost her rudder and appears to be proceeding to Yarmouth, he has sent HMS Lutine after her.

Folios 63-64: enclosure in folio 62. Letter dated 12 September 1799 by Admiral Dickson [William Dickson], HMS Veteran, Horsley Bay to Captain Charles Cobb, HMS Glatton. Is sending a copy letter explaining to Admiral Mitchell his reasons for anchoring on the evening of 10 September 1799 and not following him to sea. Mentions the Gelderland and Lieutenant Williams. HMS Romulus, with 350 Russian troops on board was off the entrance to the Texel and she informed him they passed the Scaw two days previously, in company with the rest of ships carrying Russian troops. A Russian squadron with 5000 troops on board had sailed 8 days before. He has ordered the Gelderland to proceed to the Nore. Has just received an order, via HMS Martin for all ships to proceed to the Nore.

Folios 65-66: enclosure in folio 62. Letter dated 10th September 1799 by Admiral Dickson [William Dickson], HMS Veteran, off the Helder to Admiral Mitchell. Report of a collision between the Gelderland and this ship, which meant they could not immediately follow the fleet. They are now ready to sail and is sending the Carpenter's report of the damage. Had received orders, from Captain Temple to take charge of the Gelderland, which he has done. Wishes to praise the efforts of Lieutenant Williams in his mastery of the Gelderland.
