Description

Folios 57-58: Charles Cobb, HMS Glatton, Horsley Bay. As ordered by Admiral Mitchell [Andrew Mitchell] he sailed from the Mars Deep, on 10 September 1799, with a squadron of His Majesty's ships and Dutch prize ships, 19 named in the margin. Yesterday he was boarded by Captain St. Clair [Matthew St. Clair], HMS Martin and shown orders from Admiral Dickson [William Dickson] directing the Squadron to proceed to the Nore. This morning HMS Ardent, HMS Monmouth and HMS Lutine were with him and he could see the remainder of the ships and the Dutch ships on their way in. Two ships, HMS Veteran and the Dutch ship Gelderland were left behind, but he expects them to catch up today, Lieutenant Williams is in command of the Gelderland. He will proceed to the Nore as soon as possible.

Folio 59: enclosure in folios 57-58. Note stating he has sent Richard Barnett, Master, HMS Glatton on shore with these letters as he knows the area.

Folios 60-61: enclosure in folios 57-58. Orders dated 10 September 1799 by Admiral Mitchell [Andrew Mitchell], HMS Isis, Mars Deep to Captain Charles Cobb, HMS Glatton. Orders to take 19 named ships under his command and proceed to the River Thames, upon approaching Oazley Bay anchor the squadron and send the Dutch ships to Sheerness under the charge of HMS America and Ratvisan. Report to Admiral Duncan [Adam Duncan] and direct Captain Smith [John Smith], HMS America to wait on Admiral Graeme [Alexander Graeme].
