Folios 260-261: George Countess, HMS Ethalion, Guernsey Roads. Is sending his letter with Lieutenant James Murray of HMS Seaflower, who has to return because vessel is leaking and had damaged to her False Keel. Reports that the previous day the sloop HMS Fairy arrived escorting another vessel carrying artillery men for Guernsey and Jersey, and HMS Seagull arrived from Plymouth. Having consulted the Governor, Major General Sir Hew Dalrymple, he has sent HMS Boston and HMS Phoebe to look into Cape de la Hague and along the French coast, Encloses a copy of his orders to them.
Folios 262-263: enclosed with folios 260-261. Copy of orders dated 23 April 1798 from Captain George Countess, HMS Ethalion, Guernsey Roads, to Captain Robert Barlow of HMS Phoebe. Captain Barlow is ordered to sail with HMS Boston to Cap de la Hague and to inspect the French coast to discover whether there is a threat of Guernsey being invaded from there. He is to be particularly alert for a recall signal, which will be flown from Fort George.
